Liberians divided over Chinese investment plan – 20 Feb 09
China is set to make one if its biggest overseas investments, in the west African nation of Liberia. It’s promising to spend $2.6bn developing an iron ore mine. It’s hoped the project will create 3000 jobs in a country struggling to recover from years of war. Dan Nolan reports from the mine site, about 150 kilometres north of the capital, Monrovia.

. .and that we want some out our natives to be involved in any foreign businesses that come to the island. Now Liberia does not need to react as we did in terms of physically threatening the foreigners to show respect. After a 14 year war Liberia needs to be aware it is IMPERATIVE to clean up its reputation. I think the local people should be well informed about any changes and allowed to make any suggestions. It’s your lives but I BEG you don’t make it racial its more political than anything.
@gbalah162 I understand where you are coming from. In the caribbean at first the Asians/ Indians/ Mid Easterns tried to (and in some islands have succeeded unfortunately) create social classes based on race after having invested/ set up businesses there. In Jamaica we have a high foreign population who although are for the most part calling shots and are more financially stable after our mini “rebellion” the Jamaicans made it clear we are not inviting ppl to take us for fools. .
@fransjoubertdotcom EXACTLY. in my island of Jamaica we have Chinese, Japanese, Lebanese, Syrian, East Indian; etc, who invest in our country. Initially and not surprisingly there were some distrust and cultural conflicts but after the locals/ natives made it clear that we wanted involvement and are interested in the betterment of our country we somehow were able to come to terms with one another. Inviting foreign ppl to “aid” ones country is a bit risky but with careful planning it can work.
I work with Chinese all the time in Africa and I find their investments beneficial to the continent,m I dont think we should judge people just because of different cultures and I am in Liberia, so I should know better than most
PLEASE LEAVE OUR COUNTRY ASIANS. THEY ARE NOT THERE FOR THE PEOPLE. the chinese go into these countries and still do not mix with the people or work with them. they USE them and make their money off the African people. I DO NOT like asians, and I dont want them in OUR COUNTRY or on the CONTINENT.!

@MARCK224: What does the USA’s national debt have to do with blacks being savages? I know that lots of areas in Africa have massive amounts of natural resources, more for the blacks to get cheated out of, or squander. A lot of the USA’s national debt is from all of the welfare we pay to blacks. The Current debt is 14 trillion.
@tickyul a country of 3.5million people with more land than they need. Our natural Resources value is worth more than US$10trillion dollars. Thats why we are seeking partnership with China and other rising powers the will help us move foward why becoming a manufacturing nation rather than just raw material exporting. We don’t need the US. get it? The US is forcing her self on Liberia. China is willing to help us and give us access to her market of 1.7billion people. That is what Liberia needs
@tickyul are you sure of what you are saying? what is the US current debt sr? what is the value of your dam currency? do you have any natural resource to back the dam dollar and pay of your US$25trillion+ debt? your dam Congress sent a team of five to Liberia 2009 to tell our government that the US needs Liberia. That the US doesn’t want to exploit our natural resources but rather partner with us to develop them. I sense a tune of change! But, my first respond was get the hell out of LIBERIA!
@marck224: Well, I predict that your country will remain a craphole…..for quite some time to come. Maybe you can take some of our sava…..er, African Americans into your country, they would fit right in. We have a city called Detroit, which is one of many run by blacks. Detroit and most black cities probably resemble a lot of Liberian cities, true crapholes. So, If you take some of our blacks, they should fit right in. Ciao!
We will defininately encourage investments in our country. But don’t get me wrong, we wount just allow just any investors this time, but rather true investors who are partners and have what it takes to bring needed change and effect massive developments. And thoes kinds of investors are not Western but rather Chinese, Russians, South Americans Middle Easterns and other Africans. We want investors who come from nations that have the technology, money, and can put the West into Recession any day!
@marck224: Yes, companies want to get to your resources. That is not a tribute to the people of Liberia, it is a tribute to god’s creation. Your leadership should encourage investment to come in, the non blacks may help elevate the low IQ black populations standard of living.
@tickyul you claimed that my country is doomed but yet US investors are fighting to get in at the same time trying to compete with China. We didn’t even ask your government for money but yet the US is throwing hundred of millions at our country to aid our redevelopment. A country of 3.5million people with natural resources so much has attracted more than US$15billion dollars in investments and more are to come pulling in. We have about 500,000+ direct well pay jobs line up plus more to follow.

Have you ever tought about why your dam Firestone Company is still in Liberia since 1926 up til now? 86yrs of exploiting my country and still not enougth. Firestone owed us US$69billion in taxes from the past 86yrs. We want that money! pretty soon, it might have to consider going to another country where they will allow slavery and invest becuase we will kick Firestone out of Liberia and they will have to pay every ga dam cent they owed us from the past 86yrs. China is the best way for Liberia!

@marck224: Uh, yeah we have blacks in the USA, they are not what I would call an ASSET, if you get my drift. And if you mean to imply that blacks were the genius behind the USA, you are out of your mind. They provided unskilled slave labor, that is it. @tickyul I think thats a very poor point to based your argument don’t you think? aren’t there blacks in the US? weren’t the blacks the same very people who built this modern nation call the United States of America? and to a point, who do you think is to be bleamed for the situation Liberia is faced with today for which you are overtly giving cheers for it’s deteriorated state?
@marck224: My reason for not wanting Haitians coming is because they are BLACK, and as we all can very clearly see, BLACKS ARE A VERY POOR FIT FOR MODERN SOCIETIES. Liberia would be a better fit for these people, open sewers running thru neighborhoods. Cheers!
