As long as your reply to post is relevant then its ok but it still depend on the moderator of the blogs if they consider your comments as spam they won’t approved your comments.

Posting comment on others blog and getting link is fine but the blog should be theme based.
Check for “nofollow” tag if it is present than your comment won’t serve the purpose.

The backlinks are editorial votes and excess of every thing is bad, so try to get quality links from different sources.

my page has appeared on as irrelevent posts on blogs and is part of links back to my page which is helping my pagerank. so i would say it has helped me. there are some blogs where i have posted and it did nothing for my page. so go ahead and post on a bunch of blogs and you’ll have some returns for it.

Technically if they have follow on the blog comments you will get a link but this is considered a bad way to link build

From my conversations with Internet marketing people who have and are doing that, it is called a linkback and isn’t frowned on anymore. As long as the info you post is relevant. Because the “spiders” are looking for traffic to your site and can tell how long people are staying there, its key to have a site that provides them with info they can use. So these people have RSS feeds, and other ads and maintain the “freshness” of their site; its all going thru changes.

That’s still called comment spam

And many blog platforms have already caught on to this seemingly genuine comment (but nonetheless nothing but to advertise a site) by using rel=nofollow tag on comments.

That means SEO-wise, your effort has no benefit in terms of your linkbuilding because search engines will not read that there is a link from the blog comment to your site

Here’s a 2005 post from the official Google blog called “Preventing comment spam” (yes, they’ve been on to this approach years ago)

In my blog, I can smell your type of comment a mile away and delete them.

As far as getting linkjuice/pagerank, it depends on whether or not the blog you are commenting on uses the nofollow tag on links inside comments.
As far as ethics go, I wouldn’t include my link unless my site was relevant or had further information on the topic of the blog post. This will help insure that you link ’sticks’ (doesn’t get deleted by the moderators of the blog) you don’t want to be marked as just a link spammer.
For example, say you posted a bunch of comments on a high pagerank blog and with something along the lines of “nice post” Tomtom on few posts.
The admin on that blog might not only delete your comment, but also continue to delete every comment you make from then on out because he thinks you are just link spamming. This would really hurt if later down the road if you had a high quality, relevant comment with more related content on your website that would not only stick in the comments, but drive traffic and maybe even buyers/readers.

So be smart about your posts because they also represent your brand.

I would also suggest simply having your commenter name be your link whenever possible because it’s non intrusive and doesn’t raise flags as much.
